There's nothing fun about a cold rain, sleet and ice in the forecast... but luckily it is Friday! Plus we got the news that our news director Kelly just had her healthy baby boy! She is the first of 4 of us having babies in the next few months. Anyway, we are thrilled for her, and now back to the forecast:
Let's start with the Upstate... it's pretty simple. It's going to rain, it will be cold, it will last a while! It won't rain the whole time Friday-Saturday, but it will be off and on starting around 3am Friday morning and won't exit until noon or later on Saturday. I think our best chance for widespread, moderate to heavy rain will be Friday morning, then Friday evening and overnight. Over an inch of rain will be possible, especially south of I85!
Mountains will get a mix of sleet/snow and freezing rain tonight. It will be mostly freezing rain for the commute on Friday morning, then will transition to all rain by midday Friday. Roads could be hazardous, and some power outages will be possible where ice accumulates most. Northern mountains will have the best chance of power outages, while areas around Asheville/Hendersonville will mainly watch for slippery bridges/overpasses and generally icy roads. Once the rain takes over Friday afternoon, it will stick around through Friday night. I do think the rain will hold on longer in the Upstate, while the mountains should see a faster clearing Saturday morning.
