CENTRAL, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Southern Wesleyan University has evacuated students at a residence hall after bats were discovered there.

University officials said dozens of bats were found just outside a residence hall earlier this week, before three were discovered inside the building.

Approximately 107 students had to evacuate the residence hall as a result of the infestation. University officials said it was a security measure, as bats can carry diseases.

The university said a team has been brought in to help get rid of the bats. However, they won't be exterminated.

"It is a protected species of bat, so we just can't exterminate," said SWU's Chad Peters. "We have to give them the opportunity to vacate the premises."

University officials said the students should be able to get back in their dorms by Monday, at the earliest, but it is dependent on the cleanup and if more bats are discovered.
