HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

Thousands were evacuated from Holyoke Community College a little before noon Tuesday after the administration received word of a credible threat.

"It was extremely chaotic," said student, Bethany Quinlen. "At first no one knew what to do."

"It was definitely scary," said part-time student Ryan Andrews.

State police assigned to the Hampden County District Attorney's office are questioning a young male who allegedly made threats to a family member and members of Holyoke Community College.

"We made the decision to evacuate the campus," said the VP of Administration of Finance at HCC, William Fogarty. "Shortly after the evacuation began we received a report from State Police that the individual in question had been apprehended."

The suspect was arrested at a Springfield residence Tuesday and is not being identified at this time.

The original call came in when the suspect called a crisis hotline which in turn contacted law enforcement officials.

Campus re-opened for night classes at 4 p.m. And, Fogarty said that the school did not plan to add additional safety precautions.

"There's no need for that," said Fogarty. "This was really based on a threat by one individual who is now in police custody."

The investigation is on going. State police will determine if and how the suspect will be charged criminally.
