SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Hundreds of fans packed Bridges Arena at Spartanburg Methodist College Wednesday night in the hopes of witnessing history.
"We're really excited about this," SMC student Saeeda Sneed said. "It's been really exciting just to be part of the school and to have a team that's been so good," Sneed said.
It's a basketball game 91-year-old Fletcher Thompson didn't want to miss either.
Thompson graduated from SMC in 1941, though it was Textile Industrial Institute back then, but that did not keep Thompson from making his way back to campus to see if the men's basketball team would clinch a 30-0 record - its first undefeated season.
"Makes me very proud. I'm very proud of SMC and all that they do," Thompson said.
Dr. Colleen Keith, the school's president, poured on some school spirit too as she helped students with body paint.
"Because of our record, we've already won enough games where we have a national bid already into the national tournament," Keith said.
She's proud of the team and its No. 1 ranking in the NJCAA Division I.
"We're a great place for so many people, but so many people don't know about us," Keith said.
The Pioneers defeated Limestone College's JV team 84-45.
The win makes the SMC men's basketball team the only undefeated college basketball team in the country. They will play in the NJCAA Tournament on March 18.
