Deputies said a former middle school teacher in Greenville County had sex with two 15-year-old students in 2008.
Greenville County deputies said Robert Powell, 30, turned himself in to deputies on Wednesday on charges of two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and two counts of committing a lewd act upon a child under 16.
Master Deputy Laura Campbell said Powell was a teacher at Northwest Middle School and 26 years old at the time of the incidents. She said deputies were not notified of the incidents until Jan. 22, 2013, though the lewd acts happened on school grounds and outside their home between August and December of 2008, according to the arrest warrants.
Greenville County Schools Director of Communications Oby Lyles said Powell was put on leave on Mon. Feb. 11 when the sheriff's office notified them of their investigation and he resigned from his current position as part-time band director at Ralph Chandler Middle School on Wednesday.
At the time of the sexual misconduct allegations, Lyles said Powell was band director at Northwest while the victims were high school students.
Lyles said Powell served as band director at Northwest from August 2005 until June 2011 along with assisting the Travelers Rest High School Band until he left the district for a position in another school district. He said Powell returned to the district working at Ralph Chandler in August 2012.
Powell was given a $10,000 bond and released from jail late Wednesday night.
