PICKENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Pickens man was sentenced to 11 years and eight months in prison after being convicted of a violent assault on a Vietnam War veteran.

Russell Nix, 41, was found guilty of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature Friday.

Prosecutors said evidence showed that on Aug. 25, 2011, Nix attacked the 59-year-old victim after he confronted Nix, who was trespassing. They said that when Nix was asked to leave, he hit the victim several times, shoved him into a ditch and continued to hit him in the head and face.

The victim suffered a broken jaw and orbital bone, and a deep brain hemorrhage, prosecutors said.

Nix must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
