According to the Orlando Sentinel, NASCAR drivers are presently considered to be athletes now more than ever. “Drivers can lose up to 10 pounds of weight during a race, something that requires an immense amount of physical stamina and months of training,” reports the Orlando Sentinel.
“You have to change with the times," Austin Dillon told the Orlando Sentinel. Dillon, an AdvoCare guy who is considered one of the up-and-coming drivers on the NASCAR circuit, works out extensively. "The good drivers are in great shape. Some of them are freaks of nature and they don't have to get in as good a shape, but for me I feel it's an advantage to be confident and in shape."
According to the Orlando Sentinel, Dillon works a demanding schedule three days a week that includes CrossFit workouts, with strong quick bursts to build up the cardiovascular system, weightlifting and even hot yoga.
Carl Edwards, a NASCAR veteran, has been working out to improve his racing for years and neglected to reveal to the Orlando Sentinel his trade secrets.
"I thought working out was silly," Edwards said. "I didn't understand why people would do that. And then I saw a story about Mark Martin and how much he invested in his fitness. And I thought that was great. I can go work out, run, lift weights, eat right and it doesn't cost anything. And I thought it would help me with racing, and it's turned out to be one of the great things I've done in my life."
