LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A hearing to determine whether Ammar Harris is the suspect in the Las Vegas Strip shooting and resultant crash was scheduled in a Los Angeles court room.
Harris' public defender called for an identity hearing during the suspect's extradition proceedings on Monday, effectively fighting his being turned over to authorities in Nevada.
The identity hearing was scheduled for March 14.
Harris' appearance in Los Angeles Superior Court follows his capture on Thursday, a week removed from the early morning shooting and wreck that happened on Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road on Feb. 21.
According to police, Harris was suspected of firing shots at Kenneth Cherry Jr. and his Maserati while traveling on the Strip. Shots struck Cherry while he was trying to flee Harris' black Range Rover.
Police said Cherry's Maserati accelerated through the intersection and struck a taxi cab, causing it to burst into flames. The cab's driver Michael Boldon and passenger Sandra Sutton-Wasmund, along with Cherry, all died as a result.
Harris faces three counts of murder and a count of attempted murder connected to shots fired at Cherry's passenger who survived the incident.
After a weeklong manhunt, Harris was arrested at an apartment complex in Studio City, Calif.
On Friday, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson vowed to put his top prosecutors on the case and he said he would explore the death penalty against Harris.
