PIEDMONT, SC (FOX Carolina) -
The future of a popular Piedmont restaurant destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon is uncertain, according to the manager.
The fire happened at Callahan's Family Restaurant at 605 Anderson St.
The restaurant's manager, Jimmy Brown, told FOX Carolina's Ashley Daley that diners and employees were inside at the time of the fire, but they had no idea the building was ablaze. He said a passerby ran inside and warned them of the fire, which prompted an evacuation.
A picture of the scene sent in to FOX Carolina by an eyewitness showed thick, black smoke billowing from the building.
Brown said investigators have determined the fire was started by an electrical malfunction. He said the building is considered a total loss.
The building which housed the restaurant was built in the 1940s, A caller to the FOX Carolina newsroom said the restaurant has had different names in the past, but has become a landmark in the town.
Brown said that the owners insured the property, but they were not sure if they want to reopen the business.
In a written statement sent to FOX Carolina, the owners said the restaurant was their dream and felt like extended family.
"We would like to thank the entire Piedmont community for their outpouring of support to us," said Kevan and Michelle Callahan in the statement. "Please remember our employees and their families. We are so saddened for their loss of a job. At Callahan's, our staff is like family, and it hurts to seem them suffering as well."
The Callahans said the in statement that they have enjoyed serving Piedmont and the surrounding areas.
