Ammo flying off the shelves at local gun retailer

Posted: Updated:

Across the country and here in Western Mass, ammunition is flying off the shelves.

General Manager of Guns Inc. in West Springfield Philip Marcil says the high demand is unprecedented.

Marcil says that a shortage of ammunition from manufacturers is what's sparking the sudden ammo sales and that many of the people coming into the store are simply worried that they won't have access to ammo.

Marcil says it also has a lot to do with the political environment, especially in light of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Since the renewed calls of gun control, especially in Washington, Marcil says his customers are worried about access.

The spike in demand is affecting local retailers like Guns Inc. and also retail giants like Walmart, who have put caps on ammo sales.

For the first time in the store's history, Guns Inc. has had to put a cap on ammo, limiting the amount to a two-box maximum on the amount of ammunition each person can buy at a time.

Marcil says this is both unprecedented and has kept his business booming.

"It's a 40 to 50 percent increase in handgun sales, long gun sales. So like I said, for us it is a major step up in business," he said.

A local gun manufacturer is also seeing gains in their bottom line because of this.

Smith and Wesson is reporting that earnings more than tripled in its most recent quarter.
