GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Troopers were investigating a fatal crash after a SUV struck a utility pole Thursday morning.

The Highway Patrol reported the wreck happened at 3:25 a.m. along Mitchell Road near Hudson Road.

Troopers said a 35-year-old man was driving a Chevy Tahoe north along Mitchell Road. When it ran off the right side of the road, the driver overcorrected, then the vehicle ran back across and off the left side of the road.

The unrestrained driver struck a utility pole and died at the scene, troopers said.

Greenville County Deputy Coroner Jeff Fowler identified the victim as Charles Michael Johnson of Greenville. A cause of death will be released following an autopsy scheduled for Thursday.
