Casino developer continues to meet with Springfield residents

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Casino operators looking to build in Springfield continue to meet with city residents neighborhood by neighborhood.

Penn National representatives met with the Armoury-Quadrangle Civic Association Thursday night on State Street to answer questions ranging from traffic concerns to business relocation.

It's all part of the casino developers' mission to reach out to residents throughout the city.

"Things have been a little stark in recent years in terms of the downtown," said President of the Armoury-Quadrangle Civic Association Carol Costa.

Costa has lived in Springfield for nearly 40 years. She's not sure whether a casino will bring life to downtown, but she knows it will affect her and her neighbors.

"We live in the downtown neighborhood so frankly whichever of these two moves forward, it will impact us greatly," she said.

Penn National and MGM have each been meeting with neighborhoods and civic associations over the course of the past year.

"We listen to their concerns, answer their questions and really become a part of the community," said Director of Public Affairs for Penn National Jeff Morris.

Thursday night's meeting comes just days before MGM and Penn National have to present extensive plans in front of city leaders and the public.

"The city has asked us to give a little more specifics on traffic which is obviously important and then how also we're going to benefit the greater Springfield and Hampden County community as a whole," Morris said.

Meantime, Costa isn't sure what a casino could mean for her community, but she wants to see a positive change for the city.

"We're looking for something to transform Springfield into the vibrant place that we'd like it to be," she said.

The two developers will present more detailed traffic and entertainment plans on Monday at 2:30 p.m. at CityStage.

CBS 3 Springfield will be broadcasting the event on CBS 3 Now.
