An Upstate mother was arrested after police said her 5-year-old son had bad bruises and cuts on his neck, chest and back after a spanking.
Union police said they were notified about the bruises after the Department of Social Services was contacted and were told the boy's mother had spanked him with a belt.
When they spoke to 30-year-old Clarissa Thomas, police said she admitted to spanking her son with a belt, but he was moving while she hit him, so there were marks all over him.
Police said they waited for the boy to come home from school and documented his injuries, which matched the belt used. Officers said they placed the boy and his younger brother with a relative.
Thomas was arrested and charged with cruelty to a child and has since been released from jail.
