PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona returned to work Monday after spending more than two weeks recuperating from a broken shoulder he suffered when he fell while crossing a street on his way to lunch.
At his office Monday morning he laughed and made jokes with the media while wearing an arm sling saying, "In fact, one good thing about it, I lost 10 pounds."
When asked about how he will be able to fulfill his work duties, the sheriff said he will be following doctor's orders.
"I think I have to be just a little more careful. I usually have one speech a day, but I'm going to slow down just a little," he said. "I have to make sure I do what the doctor says because I don't want to be wearing this thing (pointing to his sling)."
The sheriff says he tripped on a sidewalk on Feb. 28 near his headquarters on his way to a restaurant to get a quick bowl of soup. He fell on his shoulder and broke it in two places.
The Maricopa County sheriff thanked his wife Ava for helping to take care of him after spending two days in the hospital and just over two weeks at home.
"She has done a good job making sure I take my pills and eat properly," said Arpaio.
Arpaio also addressed who has and has not reached out to him during this time.
"I am very humbled at the people who have called around the country," he said. "For those who don't like me and made derogatory statements, hey, freedom of speech."
He says he came close to hitting his head on a curb, but was fortunate to walk away with no other injuries, besides a few scrapes.
