The American Academy of Pediatrics says kids benefit from having a stable home with two loving parents regardless of the parents' sexual orientation.
The American Academy of Pediatrics says it believes there should be equal opportunity for every couple to get married and have children.
The organization made their announcement Thursday, citing research that shows parents' sexual orientation has no effect on a child's development as long as the families are nurturing and financially and emotionally stable. The research says that almost $2 million U.S. children are being raised by same-sex parents.
One Upstate couple, Jody and Nikki Thompson, said this is a move in the right direction.
"It is kinda just the validation of what we have always known. It's not about who you love, but how you love," said Nikki Thompson.
The Academy of Pediatrics' support for same-sex marriage comes just days before two gay marriage cases are to be considered by the U.S. Supreme Court.
