For nearly a decade America has been jamming to Fantasia's music. It's a journey that began in Hollywood back in 2004.
"Everything really went full speed ahead when I won American Idol," said Fantasia.
She says time has practically flown by but it hasn't been a fairytale.
"I can't believe that it has been 10 years for me and it's been 10 years of a lot of ups and downs."
On Friday afternoon, she made a stop at 107.3 JAMZ in the Upstate to hang out with midday host Vicky James. She was promoting her new album, Side Effects of You.
"There's been a lot of things said about me, but this is coming from my mouth in this album. You don't have to hear it from anyone else," she said.
Fantasia told Fox Carolina's Greg Funderburg that last year she took nine months out of the spotlight to focus on herself.
"Everything that I thought and felt, I wrote it in a book," she said.
She said singing and being on the stage has always been her therapy. But after much prayer and meditation, 2013 was her time to come back.
"People ask me sometimes 'would you change anything that you have done?' And I tell them 'no.' I probably wouldn't do the same things again, but I wouldn't change anything because it made me the woman I am today and its a part of my testimony," she said.
Fantasia's new album will hit store shelves April 23.
