SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Online retailer Amazon celebrated the official opening of its newest distribution center, located in the Upstate, on Monday.

The 1-million-square-foot Spartanburg fulfillment center off of John Dodd Road houses tens of thousands of merchandise items that will be sent out for delivery, filling the thousands of online orders Amazon receives weekly.

While operational since September, state and local officials attended Monday's ribbon cutting ceremony and facility tour.

The Spartanburg County Council approved incentive plans to get the center back in 2011. Also in 2011, Amazon made a deal with the state to exempt sales tax to South Carolina residents if they brought 2,000 jobs to the state.

Amazon opened its first center in Lexington County that same year and currently employs about 500 people.

The Spartanburg center already employs more than 400 full-time employees and will hire seasonal workers as needed.

The center packages and ships everything from lawnmowers to Barbie dolls, dealing with a lot of larger items.
