SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg police said a shoplifter pulled out a set of brass knuckles and a knife while trying to steal some clothes from a local mall.

Police said a security guard saw 27-year-old Colby Melton hide some T-shirts in his sweatshirt before leaving the Sears store without paying at the Westgate Mall on Sunday.

When Melton was stopped outside of the store, police said he pulled out the brass knuckles and showed the knife. The guard asked him to give back the clothes, which Melton did and put the knuckles away, according to the police report.

A police officer walked up about the same time, prompting Melton to pull the knuckles back out of his pocket, the report said.

As Melton showed the knife, police said the officer struck him in the arm to get him to drop the weapon and then took him into custody.

Melton was arrested and charged with shoplifting and concealed weapon not a pistol. He has since been released from jail.
