PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio called it the most personal letter he's ever written.

Late last week, his campaign sent out an email warning of dire consequences if supporters didn't send money right away.  Arpaio's campaign said it's all connected to an ongoing recall effort.

Sheriff Arpaio opened the letter by telling supporters he's in trouble and that he can't continue to fight without immediate help. [Read the entire letter (PDF)]

"We don't take anything for granted," said Sheriff Arpaio's campaign manager Chad Willems.  "We always play on offense and we're going to be ready for a recall election should it come about."

Willems is behind a string of letters that have gone out over the past two months, signed by the sheriff, soliciting donations.

In the latest one, Arpaio talked about the potential consequences of being unseated. In the letter he wrote, "families will worry their children will be kidnapped from the streets of Phoenix."  And that "drug smugglers will have won."

When CBS 5 News asked Willems if he thought the consequences listed were extreme he called it a reality.

"I think he's desperate," said Respect Arizona campaign manager Lilia Alvarez. "When I read the lies, the exaggeration, the misinformation, that's the only reason why he would do that."

So far Alvarez said the group has collected about half the signatures they need for a recall election and are getting more every day.

"People are catching on this is not about immigration. This is about true accountability follow the dollar where is the dollar going," said Alvarez.
