HENDERSONVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A Henderson County woman said she is thankful to be alive after she said her neighbor's pit bull attacked her last week.

Carmie Shields, 89, said it all happened so fast in her front yard on Wednesday. She said she still has several gashes and bite marks on her left arm.

Shields said she was walking up her steps to her porch when the dog attacked her and knocked her down. She said the dog's owner eventually came outside to stop the dog.

Henderson County Sheriff's Office investigators said the dog's owner was issued a ticket for allowing the dog to be off his property and he was warned about the dog's expired rabies vaccination.

Right now, the dog remains in quarantine to make sure it doesn't have rabies. Shields said she spent one night in the hospital and had to return during the weekend because of an infection.

Shields wants to see the dog put down because she's afraid to return home. The dog owner declined to talk on camera but said he wants his dog back.

Animal Control has deemed the dog dangerous and the owner can appeal. If after the appeal the owner wishes to retain his dog, he will have to meet strict requirements of fencing, signage and leash laws. If he doesn't want to comply with the strict rules, the dog will be humanely destroyed for the attack.
