ABBEVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Abbeville County deputies and SLED said a man is dead following a shooting late Monday night.

Interim Sheriff Ronnie Ashley said the parents of the victim heard gunshots outside their home on Old Douglas Mill Road around 10:30 p.m. They said they ran outside and found their 30-year-old son dead in the yard, according to Ashley.

Coroner Sam Ferguson identified the victim as Jamil Phillips. He ruled Phillips death a homicide and said he was shot multiple times.

Cousin Landrew Collier said Phillips could easily make a friend and he was supposed to spend time with him later in the week.

"Somebody would actually kill this man in his mother's and dad's yard, man, that's shocking," Collier said. "And it's so rural out here, it's going to be hard for anybody to hear anything."

Phillips' family wonders who could have killed him because they said he did not have any enemies.

Investigators said there have been no arrests, but they don't see a threat to the community.

The shooting happened the same day as voters in Abbeville County headed to the polls for the Democratic Primary in an effort to elect a permanent sheriff.
