Coroner: Seneca man froze to death after fleeing deputies

SENECA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Seneca man whose body was found by a turkey hunter Thursday morning froze to death after he fled deputies after a crash, according to officials.

Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said 40-year-old Douglas Chapman Jr. was found about 7 a.m. in a wooded area of the Friendship community near Seneca.

Addis said Chapman's body was found near where he was seen running into the woods after deputies arrived at a motorcycle crash Sunday morning. He said the Oconee County Sheriff's Office had an outstanding warrant for Chapman's arrest.

Chapman was found wearing only jeans and boots, Addis said. He said the low temperature on Sunday was 45 degrees and it had been raining. He said that as hypothermia sets in, victims become disoriented, confused and feel a sensation of warmth. He said this may have caused Chapman to shed his shirt.

Addis said Chapman had suffered minor cuts, consistent with being in a wooded area. He said there were no injuries that indicated Chapman was involved in a crash.
