GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

When the clock struck 11 p.m. Saturday, time was up for a popular drive-in diner in Greenville. Wade Hampton Boulevard's The Clock closed its doors for good after 60 years of business.

The diner was overflowing with a constant stream of customers throughout Saturday, hoping to get one last taste of the good and friendly atmosphere.

"Familiar faces, familiar food, it's always the same," said longtime customer Jeff Burns. "Something you've grown up on. It's a staple in your life."

Even more so for the people who worked at The Clock and spent so much time making the diner what it is known for.

Former employee Johnny Burnside, who worked there for 25 years, came back Saturday to take some last orders and say goodbye to the customers he now calls friends.

"I guess after this I won't see them no more," said Burnside.

Saturday customers relived their favorite pastimes as well.

"I parked in the back lot and walked through the door like a teenager, just one more time," said Burns. "I just had to recapture that nostalgia."

"I always eat on the side counter, standing up because only seniors were allowed when I was in school," said customer Robert Gilstrap.

The customers say the food can't be replaced, but it's the owners and employees they will miss the most. They wish they could stop time from bringing an end to The Clock.

"If there's some way they could stay I would love it," said customer Susan Lamm. "I know times are hard and bad right now with the economy but this is a great place, people love it."

Owners tell us The Clock is closing because they cannot afford the rising cost of rent. They say they are looking into reopening the restaurant in a different location.
