Smoking ban takes affect for Springfield Housing Authority - FOX Carolina 21

Smoking ban takes affect at all Springfield Housing Authority properties

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A full-smoking ban at all Springfield Housing Authority Properties took effect on Monday, April 1.

This time last year, the housing authority had called for a partial ban, which prohibited people from smoking inside buildings.

However, this full-smoking ban bars smoking both inside and outside of buildings.

The goal is to make these properties healthier places for people to live and work, according to housing authority representatives.

However, some residents told CBS 3 that banning smoking outside is going too far.

"I agree on the smoking ban in the apartments. I think it's a great idea. But I do not go along with it ... not to be able to smoke on the premises outside. We're not hurting anybody outside," said Marilynn Hallas, a resident of one of Springfield housing's properties.

Housing authority officials said the partial ban has already caused several residents to quit smoking, and they hope this trend will continue under the full ban.
