GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A once dilapidated factory was demolished Tuesday as crews continued work to revitalize the Poinsett District in Greenville County.

While the building was prepped more than a month ago, crews officially began tearing down the old Piedmont Shirt Factory along Poinsett Highway on Tuesday at 9 a.m.

The demolition makes way for economic development in the corridor - an area officials said was once the hub of economic activity in Greenville.

Additionally, officials hope the revitalization will make way for a mixed-use development at the site. Officials hope this first project will be a catalyst for additional investment, creating new jobs and excitement for the now decayed area.

All of the efforts to restore the area are part of the Poinsett Corridor Revitalization Coalition supported by representatives from Greenville County, Greenville County Redevelopment Authority, Furman University, Greenville County Recreation and other private and public entities.

In addition to demolition, some of the revival has begun with the addition of a new sidewalk across from the factory along Hammett Street and April 13, Leadership Greenville and TreesGreenville will plant new trees along that area.
