CHEROKEE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Authorities said a baby boy and his sister in Cherokee were safe Tuesday night after missing for more than a day.

Ray Stamper, spokesman for the Cherokee Indian Police Department, said 4-month-old Kiera Smith and her 15-month-old brother, Liam, were taken by 20-year-old Kyle Smith from their home in Whittier about 12:10 p.m. Monday.

Stamper said investigators believed the children were in grave danger.

According to a post on the department's Facebook page, the children were reunited with their mother after being brought to the police station about 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Stamper said Kyle Smith is expected to turn himself in to law enforcement Wednesday.
