State police are investigating a fatal crash involving 20-year-old Jackson Rasario who police said fled a motor vehicle stop early Wednesday morning in Chicopee.
According to state police shortly before 12:30 a.m. a trooper on patrol observed a vehicle approaching him from behind speeding on Route 391 southbound in Chicopee. The trooper pulled to the right lane and let the vehicle pass, then activated his lights in an attempt to stop the driver.
The SUV slowed and continued down the off-ramp at Exit 2 and stopped. The trooper reported he saw the male suspect moving inside of his car and that when he got out of the cruiser to approach the car, the SUV accelerated and fled down the ramp.
The suspect proceeded onto Route 391 northbound. As the trooper followed and approached Exit 3 he observed a plume of smoke and discovered that the SUV the suspect was driving had rolled over and the driver had been ejected.
Rasario was transported to Baystate Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Troopers located a replica handgun in the vehicle and found the Springfield man was in possession of a large quantity of cash. At this point police believe the suspect only had a learner's permit.
The crash remains under investigation by Troop B of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section and the Hampden County State Police Detective Unit.
