ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has a message for drivers - don't be a zombie.

The whimsical take on a serious topic is part of a new ad campaign aimed at preventing distracted driving. The two ads - one 30 seconds long, the other nearly a minute - were posted to the department's YouTube channel on Tuesday and Wednesday (http://youtu.be/wBN9fmwBpYw).

The videos begin with the passenger of a car traveling on a highway curiously looking out of his window at passing drivers, who are not only holding cell phones but appear to have been transformed into the undead. The car then passes what appears to be the scene of a fender-bender with several zombies holding cell phones standing nearby. By the end of the video, the driver of the passenger's car answers her ringing cell phone and is instantly transformed into a zombie.

"Talking on a phone reduces more than 35 percent of your brain activity needed for driving," an announcer says. "This makes a good driver become a zombie."

The videos end with the tag line, "Don't become a zombie. Don't drive distracted."

Recently, North Carolina lawmakers passed a bill that outlawed texting, emailing or browsing the internet while driving.
