PHOENIX (CBS5) -

An Arizona Department of Public Safety officer said he was forced to shoot at the driver of a stolen SUV after the man tried to run him over Sunday night.

Phoenix police said 15-year-old Alexander Wilson was killed in the shooting.

The officer ran the plates on the late-model Chevrolet Suburban and learned it was stolen and tried to pull the car over at a Chevron gas station near 35th Avenue and Camelback Road about 9:30 p.m., said Bart Graves of DPS.

Police said Wilson pulled into the gas station parking lot and turned off the vehicle. The officer walked up to the Suburban and Wilson started the vehicle again and gunned it in the direction of the officer, Graves said.

Graves said the officer shot through the passenger window of the Suburban, but the vehicle continued south on 35th Avenue until it crashed through a cinder block wall and into the backyard of a house about 100 yards from the Chevron station.

"The officers at the door [were] saying, 'Get out because they're armed,'" Christina Boone said.

Boone and her husband were in the their living room when the crash happened, just behind where the car stopped.

"It's just on the opposite side of the wall ... had he not stopped, with all we use it as a storage room, had he not stopped, he would have went through the living room," Boone said.

No one inside the home was hurt in the crash.

Wilson was found dead in the Suburban, but a passenger in the car, an 18-year-old man, jumped from the moving vehicle before the collision. He turned himself in at Phoenix Police Headquarters Monday morning and was released pending the investigation, according to Phoenix police.

Graves said the Phoenix Police Department was handling the criminal investigation while DPS would handle the administrative end of the officer-involved shooting.

The 31-year-old officer has been with DPS for eight years. His identity is not being released at this time.
