GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A Greenville city council member and police warn that the ongoing violence at a local apartment complex riddled with crime won't be tolerated.
Greenville police said since the beginning of 2012, there were way more than a thousand calls for service from the Shemwood Crossing Apartments on Shemwood Lane. The city warns that if changes aren't made and the violence doesn't stop, the property can be closed.
Tuesday night, a woman was shot in the leg, as she walked inside her own apartment, which is located off of Old Augusta Road.
Wednesday, the owners of Shemwood were issued a nuisance property citation by police.
Police said it's because the violence has become too much. Just in the last year, there were at least five shootings with at least as many people injured.
Greenville City Council woman Lillian Brock Flemming said the city and police have tried to help for a while, with plenty of extra patrols.
"We've spent a lot of taxpayers' dollars on that one facility," said Flemming. "And we cannot continue to do that because we don't provide that same type of protection; we can't just police one complex when we have hundreds of complexes in the city of Greenville."
Flemming wants the complex's new, out-of-state, owners to step up and increase their own security, enforce the rules, and better screen the residents before they move in.
She said if they don't, the city could ultimately shut the complex down.
