UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Union police said one person is dead and several officers were injured after an altercation Wednesday night.

Officers said after a car accident on Sardis Road at about 6 p.m., a person involved in the accident got involved in a physical altercation with another person on Hart Street.

Police initially said an officer responded to the assault and was injured trying to break up the fight.

On Thursday, police said one person became combative towards the responding officers and deputies, and after an officer took control of that person, the person lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Union County Coroner William Holcombe said 21-year-old Jackie McBeth of Fountain Inn died about 7 p.m. at Wallace Thompson Hospital. He said an autopsy was performed Thursday, but his cause of death was delayed awaiting further results.

Union County deputies said they were investigating the wreck along with the Highway Patrol. Deputies said McBeth was the driver of a car involved in the crash.

Police said two of their officers along with two Union County deputies were taken to the hospital with injuries and have since been released.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the case.
