Coroner: Man dies after fight with family at Spartanburg hospital

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Spartanburg County coroner and state law enforcement are investigating a man's death after they said he died after getting into a fight with family at a Mary Black Hospital.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger said 46-year-old Ansel Dewayne Marlar died after a short altercation between him and his family while in the hospital that later involved security.

Spartanburg County deputies said they were called after the nursing staff and hospital security reported that Marlar assaulted them.

The staff told deputies he had asked to be discharged, which they did not recommend, but were working on the paperwork. At one point, he hit a nurse and kicked a security guard, according to the deputy's report.

When a deputy arrived, security guards were holding Marlar down as he continued to yell and refused to put his shirt on, the report stated.

After a deputy had handcuffed him and asked for a wheelchair to transport him, Marlar rolled himself onto his stomach and became unresponsive, deputies said. Staff put him back on the bed and he died a short time later, deputies said.

Deputies said the State Law Enforcement Division is leading the investigation because Mary Black Hospital staff requested a deputy to help with the situation involving Marlar.

Clevenger said Marlar's cause of death is pending further investigation. He said he did not see any traumatic injury.
