Monday April 15 marks the last day tax payers can file their taxes with the Internal Revenue Service without paying potential penalties and fees.
If taxpayers have not filed their federal tax return for the 2012 year, Monday is the deadline.
According to Jackson Hewitt, more than 68 million Americans have yet to file their taxes. If you're one of those who have waited, experts have a few recommendations.
They said start by gathering all of your necessary tax forms then file electronically. They said filing online is faster, easier and more accurate.
Experts said it is important that even if someone owes taxes but cannot afford to pay them at this time, they should file their return Monday regardless. Requesting an extension only gives taxpayers until Oct. 15 to file, not to pay.
According to the United States Postal Service, federal tax returns must be postmarked by April 15 to qualify for timely filing. There are post offices across the country with extended hours to help filers send off their returns.
