GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

As news of the explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon shook the nation Monday afternoon, so did the search for runners from the Carolinas competing in the race.

The race tracks participants and lists everyone who was registered along with their last check-in time, if they raced. Some local runners had just finished, registering their final time with the explosions went off.

Simpsonville runner Mike Sullivan said he had just walked away from the race when the explosions went off.

"I was just about to finish up one of the race activities, and getting ready to go into one of the subways when I heard a big boom and a lot of white smoke," Sullivan said.

Those searching for friends and family after news of the two explosions broke quickly turned online or called their loved ones.

Greenville dentist Dr. Richard Jacques was in Boston Monday where he competed for the 10th year in a row. He told FOX Carolina he finished the race about 15 minutes before the blasts. He said following the explosions police cleared out the area and had increased security.

"We have been glued to our telephones because we've gotten calls and texts from people concerned about our well being," Jacques said.

More than 60 runners were registered to run the race from the Upstate, including 13 from Greenville, eight from Spartanburg and 11 from Asheville.

If you know someone who was participating, Boston officials said to call 617-635-4500 for information on them and anyone with information about the explosions is asked to call 1-800-494-TIPS.
