Clemson TE Cooper, QB Kelly suffer knee injuries

CLEMSON, SC (AP) -

Starting tight end Sam Cooper was one of two Clemson players who suffered knee injuries in the spring game.

Coach Dabo Swinney says Cooper and backup quarterback Chad Kelly each tore an ACL during the first quarter of the team's scrimmage. Swinney says doctors have not determined whether either player will be able to return this fall.

Cooper hurt his knee catching a 5-yard pass from Kelly on the sideline on the 11th play of the game. Kelly hurt his knee nine plays later at the end of a 17-yard run.

Cooper played in 13 games and started three in 2012, catching 10 passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

Kelly is a redshirt freshman, and Swinney says his injury leaves the Tigers with just two healthy quarterbacks on scholarship.
