WHITMIRE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Whitmire man was arrested and charged with murder in the death of a girl after a family member found the victim's body Monday, deputies said.

Newberry County deputies were called out to a home on Broome Street in Whitmire on Monday about 5 p.m. when a family member alerted authorities.

Deputies said 21-year-old Douglas Inman, of Whitmire, was charged with murder Tuesday morning and is scheduled to have a bond hearing Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies said Inman and the victim have a child together.

Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton identified the victim as 17-year-old Allyson Taylor Greenway, also of Whitmire. He said she was smothered and died from asphyxia.

Deputies said Greenway and Inman had a tumultuous relationship for some time, but they did not live together and their child was not at the home at the time of Greenway's death.

"As a parent of teenage children, I simply cannot imagine the pain the victim's family is experiencing right now. This is a tragic situation and their entire family remains in our prayer during such a difficult time," said Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster.

The sheriff's office said they did not believe the former couple had any legal problems in the past, but through their investigation interviews with friends and family members revealed signs of verbal and possibly physical abuse.

Both the suspect and the victim had attended First Baptist Church of Whitmire, where a vigil was held for the victim Tuesday. Many in the community knew both of the individuals.

"You've got such emotion, you feel loss and hurt for Allyson, and you also feel the 'wow I can't believe someone else I care about did such a terrible thing,'" said youth pastor Jerrod King.

The Whitmire Police Department, Newberry County Sheriff's Office and the State Law Enforcement Department are working together in the investigation.
