U.S. Forest officials find bomb near Forest Lakes

Posted: Updated:

U.S. Forest officials conducting a survey for an upcoming project discovered an explosive device in the woods near Forest Lakes.

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office said employees for the U.S. Forest Service were doing the survey in the area of Forest Service Road 237, north of Highway 260, in the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest, when they came across the bomb on April 15.

Authorities said the object was later determined to be an undetonated handmade explosive device consistent with a metal 'pipe bomb' design.

The road was closed for about six hours while sheriff's deputies and the U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement investigated. Bomb technicians from the Flagstaff Police Department also responded.

CCSO said the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information on the device is asked to call the sheriff's office at 928-774-4523.
