Charges dropped in Cowpens man's death

Posted: Updated:
SPARTANBURG, SC (AP) -

A Cowpens man accused of killing his father earlier this year has been released after an autopsy determined the victim died of heart-related problems and drug intoxication.

Twenty-five-year-old Jason Eric Bishop had been arrested Jan. 3 and charged with murder in the death of 65-year-old Vaughn Eugene Bishop.

The elder Bishop was found unresponsive in a pickup truck.

A witness told investigators she had seen the younger man at the scene. Investigators said Jason Bishop admitted arguing with his father and fighting with him.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger determined Bishop's death was an accident, the result of a heart attack sparked by methamphetamine intoxication. Clevenger says there was little sign of trauma.

A spokesman for the prosecutor's office says the charge was dropped because of a lack of evidence.
