Springfield arson and bomb squad officer provides insight into marathon bombing

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Law enforcement officials are working tirelessly to find out more information about the marathon bombings that claimed the lives of three and injured more than 180, dozens of whom are still fighting for the lives in Boston hospitals.

"Among items partially recovered are pieces of black nylon which could be from a backpack and what appear to be fragments of bb's and nails possibly contained in a pressure cooker device," said FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers.

Wednesday morning new details about the items recovered were revealed, including that officials found the lid to a pressure cooker thought to have been used in the twin bombings on the roof of a building near the scene.

Springfield arson and bomb squad police officer Gary Johnson says in his years on the job he has never seen anything like the bombs used in this attack.

"This is the first one I've seen this pressure cooker type," said Johnson.

But, his experience tells him that the devices were likely very sophisticated.

"Now it appears like it is sophisticated to the point where they had some good knowledge of electronics timers and things like that and devices to use," said Johnson.

CBS 3 also asked Johnson about procedures prior to events as massive as the marathon. And, he says that while sweeps are performed officials do heavily rely on the public to help look for items or people that appear to be suspicious or out of place.

"That's the most difficult and that's where the public's help is most useful," said Johnson. "There's lots of police, fire and EMS people lots of people around that can be contacted in a second."

With many questions still unanswered surrounding this attack law enforcement officials are asking for your help. If you saw anything or have any information about the bombings you are urged to call 1-800-CALL-FBI. And if you have any photos or video you have email that to boston@ic.fbi.gov.
