Connecticut man killed in Northampton workplace accident

Posted: Updated:

Around 9:40 a.m. on Thursday, a call came in alerting authorities three men were trapped following an accident involving two portable trailers.

The trailers were going to be used as temporary workspace while the Department of Transportation renovates its building on North King Street. Somehow, the trailers shifted and three contracted workers from Trico Welding, a Connecticut-based company, were stuck.

"They were in the interior of the two buildings that were being put together," said Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan. "They were trapped between those two modular units."

Sullivan said of the three men who were trapped, one died. The DA's office identified him as Alfred Cabiya, 56, of Bristol, CT.

Another worker needed to be extricated. He was transported to Baystate Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The third worker was able to escape without injury.

Sullivan said it is too early to tell why the trailers came off their blocks.

"We do not have the exact cause right now," said Sullivan. "We are going to look at the entire premises, both interior and exterior, and try to determine what happened to cause the shifting of these particular modular units."

Along with the cause, authorities want to know if there are any workplace or code violations. That could lead to who was responsible for the accident.

"What we will do is a full workplace safety evaluation, along with OSHA and the other responsible investigating agencies," Sullivan stated. "We will try to make sure to do that thorough investigation to determine the cause of the death and injuries to the individuals."

The DA's office said Cabiya leaves behind a wife and two children.
