Phoenix officer shoots man dead in struggle

Posted: Updated:

An officer fatally shot a 22-year-old man who during a fight with police was preparing to strike his partner with a wood table leg.

The man who was killed had been acting erratically, had destroyed mailboxes at the apartment complex where the shooting occurred and threatened to hurt neighbors Saturday night, according to Phoenix police Officer James Holmes.

The man's identity hasn't been released.

Witnesses told police that the suspect in the third-floor apartment across from them had been banging on their door and threatening them with bodily harm.

The officers approached the suspect's apartment and, observing that the apartment door was broken, called out to the suspect, Holmes said.

Holmes said a group of four officers tried to get the man to leave the apartment at 1719 W. Glendale Ave., but he refused and started a fight by pulling an officer into the apartment just after 9 p.m.

Police say they subdued the man, but he broke away, grabbed the table leg and raised it in an attempt to hit an officer.

Another officer then drew his gun and shot the man. A rescue team from the Phoenix Fire Department was immediately called to the scene but attempts to keep the man alive failed.
