(RNN) - Some runners from the Boston Marathon are selling their medals and donating the proceeds to charity to help victims of last week's bombing.
Albert Swallow, who finished the race in 3 hours and 15 minutes, told ESPN that he's not pocketing the money from the sale.
"I recognize the controversy regarding the sale of items related to this year's race," Swallow said via email to ESPN. "But I could not justify hanging this medal in my closet, where I have all my race medals, when someone would pay such a high price for it and I could donate the proceeds to One Fund to help the victims."
The One Fund, a charity organized by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, was established to raise money to help families that were most affected by the Boston Marathon events.
On April 15, two bombs exploded during the Boston Marathon, killing three and injuring more than 170 near the finish line of the annual Patriot's Day race.
Those selling their medals aren't the only ones donating.
According to The One Fund's website, John Hancock, a financial services company who was also a major sponsor of the Boston Marathon, provided a $1 million donation.
Other high-profile donations include Steve Pagliuca, CEO of the Boston Red Sox, and Larry Lucchino, who is the co-owner of Boston Celtics.
Swallow's medal sold for $599, and four other medals sold on eBay for an average of $646. One medal sold for $1,025, according to ESPN.
"I cannot speculate what drives collectors to pay such high prices but the opportunity to assist some way was too great to ignore," Swallow said to ESPN.
Brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were identified as suspects in the attack.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed during a police chase; Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found hiding in a boat in a Watertown, MA, backyard. He's in serious but stable condition at Beth-Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been charged with using a weapon of mass destruction.
