GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The recent rise in crime in Greenwood is forcing law enforcement to form a new unit to fight back.

Both the Greenwood County Sheriff's Office and Greenwood Police Department are working together to make the streets safer.  The agencies will have an officer assigned to the unit that will work together on a lot of the problem areas in the city and county.

The new Violent Crimes Task Force has been put in place for the city and county to work together. Greenwood Mayor Welborn Adams said their plan is to take on the local gang problems.

He said the task force was the right move because criminals don't recognize city and county borders, so they felt it would be good to work together.

The city has already passed a resolution to work with the county on the task force and the county is expected to review and pass a resolution this week.
