Upstate woman reflects on her friendship with George Jones

LIBERTY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

George Jones was known for his golden voice. He had No. 1 songs in five separate decades from the 1950s to 1990s.

Pauline Thomas, of Liberty, says the news came as a shock.

"I just said 'oh no! We have lost a good person and a good singer,'" she said.

Thomas said her sister Linda had a common law marriage with George Jones during the late 70s to early 80s. She candidly told Fox Carolina's Greg Funderburg the story of first meeting him at her mom's house in Alabama.

"He gave me a big smack on the cheek and hugged my neck. He was a lot of fun," she said.

Recently, articles came out in the National Enquirer about her sister's relationship with Jones and whether they were divorced before he married his fourth wife. Thomas said despite that, she admits he was a great singer.
