A project nearly seven years in the making officially broke ground on Saturday.
Officials gathered on Canal Street, which is site of the new $10.1 million public library.
The library site is on the edge of the Connecticut River, immediately above the Holyoke Dam.
Library officials said the new building will essentially act as a community center.
Not only will there be a collection of books, the new library will also be home to a local history room.
