The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office said an autopsy will be performed Thursday to determine the cause of death for Christopher "Mac Daddy" Kelly, 34. Kelly gained fame in the 1990's as half of the rap duo "Kris Kross."

An investigator with the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office said Kelly was found unresponsive in his southwest Atlanta home around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. He was pronounced dead at the Atlanta Medical Center at 5 p.m.

A spokeswoman with the Fulton County Police Department said unless the medical examiner finds something different, it appears Kelly died of a drug overdose. They based that off of evidence collected at the scene and witness accounts.

One witness told police that Kelly was out the night before and had taken a mixture of heroin and cocaine.

Kelly's uncle told police Kelly had a history of drug abuse.

Kelly and singing partner, Chris "Daddy Mac" Smith, found fame as teens. Their 1992 debut album, Totally Krossed Out, was a big hit. In '93 their song Jump was No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

The duo became popular for wearing their pants backwards.

Kelly's mother, Donna Kelly Pratte, and So So Def issued this statement:

"It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away on May 1. To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris – the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party. Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him."
