BLADENBORO, NC (WECT) – Suffering from Smith-Magenis Syndrome, Trevor Hancock could have given up on himself. But through the support of his fellow classmates and the community, Trevor is blossoming at West Bladen High School.

"The Dream Team,"a group of students that have taken it upon themselves to help and support Trevor. In honor of their friend, the group started a campaign, "Trevor Hancock for Prom King."

After weeks of campaigning and being nominated, Trevor was named prom king of West Bladen High.

Friends and family watched with tears in their eyes as their king was crowned. As Trevor was crowned, he thanked everyone and told them that he loves them.

When WECT visited the Trevor at his school, he was very excited and happy to be king. Though his victory is still fresh, the king already has his sights set on the crown next year.

Smith-Magenis Syndrome is a developmental disorder that affects many parts of the body. The major features of this condition include mild to moderate mental retardation, distinctive facial features, sleep disturbances, and behavioral problems.

Trevor's mother, Pamela, said doctors told her that her son would never walk or talk. King Trevor proved them wrong.

Smith-Magenis syndrome affects an estimated 1 in 25,000 individuals. There is no cure for the disorder.
