GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said a Gaffney couple found shot outside of their home died in a murder-suicide attempt.

Sheriff Steve Mueller said a neighbor found the bodies of a male and a female in the driveway of the home on a rural stretch of Dry Fork Road outside of Gaffney Friday afternoon.

Fowler has identified the deceased as 74-year-old James Truman Smith and 69-year-old Doris Marlene Smith, and said the bodies appeared to have been there for several days.

"Our investigation indicates Mr. Smith shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself more than a week ago," Fowler said.

Fowler says autopsies will be performed to help determine a cause of death.
