Pickens Co. shelter closes after flooding fear recedes

PICKENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Pickens County Emergency Management and the American Red Cross closed a shelter the day after it was opened for residents along the Saluda River.

The shelter opened Sunday for anyone living along the Saluda River who felt they should seek refuge from the rising water. The shelter remained open through the night and into Monday morning until about 7:15 a.m.

The shelter is at George's Creek Baptist Church at 1991 Saluda Dam Road in Easley.

Pickens County Emergency Management asked those living in flood prone areas of the Saluda River to continue to monitor weather information and to be prepared to evacuate if conditions deteriorate.

Officials said the Shady Acres neighborhood, homes near Fish Trap Road and homes along Old Easley Bridge Road near Highway 123 are areas of particular concern.

The Red Cross recommends that people who evacuate their homes bring the following supplies with them to the shelter:

  • Prescriptions and emergency medications
  • Medical equipment such as a wheelchair/walker, oxygen, etc.
  • Extra clothing
  • Pillows
  • Clothing
  • Hygiene supplies
  • Flashlight with batteries
  • Small board games
  • Books for entertainment
  • Specialty snacks and juices for those with dietary restrictions
  •  Basic snacks
  • Baby food and formula
  • Diapers
  • Beach chair or camp chair
  • Identification
  • Insurance information
  • Other comfort items

Additionally, shelter residents may not bring illegal drugs or alcoholic beverages or weapons into the shelter.

This is an evacuation shelter and many of the items listed above will be supplied, but may not be available at first. Food and drinks will be provided.

The shelter will remain available until residents feel safe to return home.
