A sign stands along a western NC highway to remind people of Asha's case. (May 7, 2013/FOX Carolina)
SHELBY, NC (FOX Carolina) -
Whenever Harold Degree looks through the family photo album, it brings back good memories.
"I miss her smile, playful attitude - everything," Degree said.
But sometimes it's tough too because he misses his daughter. On Valentine's Day in 2000, 9-year-old Asha Degree disappeared. Her parents said they last saw her in her bedroom.
"To this day we still think that she's alive," Harold Degree said.
So, when he sees what he calls miracle stories like the three women rescued from an Ohio home after 10 years, he said there's still hope.
"My daughter could still be alive and she could be found the same way they were found," Harold Degree said.
Back in 2000, the night Asha disappeared, drivers said they saw her walking in the middle of the night off Highway 18 in Shelby. And in August 2001, construction workers found Asha's bookbag in a wooded area off Highway 18 in Burke County, NC.
A sign still stands along the highway in Shelby in hopes of generating leads. Investigators also released an age progressed picture of what she may look like at 22 years old.
"Anytime a little girl goes missing, it's something very serious," Sgt. Mark Craig said.
He's an investigator with the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office. He said investigators are hoping for a break in the Degree case.
"In Ohio that came true, so it's at the forefront and we're currently working on leads that have come in on the Asha Degree case," Craig said.
And the Degree family said they want that break too.
"We keep praying and hoping for the best you know that one day she'll return," Harold Degree said.
If you have any information in the case, call the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office or 1-800- THE LOST.
